The Common Safety Orientation (CSO) serves as a single, standardized safety baseline for the energy sector, officially replacing legacy programs like CSTS-09 and the OSSA Regional Orientation. This comprehensive course is designed to introduce both new and highly experienced workers to the unified safe work practices that are expected in the field. Throughout the curriculum, participants engage in a deep dive into Energy Safety Canada’s 10 Life Saving Rules, which specifically address the most at-risk behaviors found in the industry. Ultimately, the training establishes a strong foundation in hazard management, emergency preparedness, and personal accountability to foster a proactive safety culture.

This specific orientation is considered the mandatory onboarding course for the energy industry. It is an absolute necessity for personnel seeking access to jobsites throughout Western Canada, as it ensures everyone operates under the same unified safe work practices. Workers must undergo this training before engaging in activities that expose them to major pressure, motion, chemical, and biological risks. Furthermore, it is required to ensure that all team members properly understand the permit-to-work system and the procedures for reporting incidents and near-misses before stepping foot on a site.

Participants have the flexibility to complete this orientation through either standard instructor-led classes or convenient online options. The course requires a time commitment of approximately four hours to cover all the essential safety modules. To successfully complete the program, students must pass a formalized written examination by achieving a minimum grade of 80%. Once earned, the CSO certification is permanent and has no expiry date, meaning workers gain a lifelong credential that requires no future renewals.
